An 1836 Town With Houses From Every Era
Spray Foam Insulation in Minden means working in a town with a long and eventful building history. Charles Veeder founded Minden in 1836, and its Main Street district is on the National Register of Historic Places. Fire destroyed a large part of downtown in 1931, and on May 1, 1933 a tornado destroyed 20% of the town's homes. Rebuilding after those disasters, plus later growth, left Minden with houses from many decades on the same streets.
A big housing stock for its size
The 2020 census counted 5,756 housing units in Minden, 12.3% vacant, with 11,928 residents, down 8.8% from 2010. Many of those homes are older, which means attics with thin, settled insulation, exterior walls with little in them, and raised floors over crawl spaces. Older houses also tend to have open chases and balloon-framed walls that let air run from the crawl space to the attic.
Cold matters here too
Minden holds the record for the coldest temperature ever measured in Louisiana: -16F on February 13, 1899, during the Great Blizzard of 1899. Deep freezes like that are rare, but ice storms and hard freezes still happen most winters in north Louisiana. Sealing and insulating the crawl space and the plumbing in outside walls protects pipes as well as comfort.
What we do in older Minden homes
We start in the attic, sealing the open tops of walls, chimney gaps and ceiling penetrations, then blow insulation to DOE's recommended R-49 to R-60. Closed walls get dense-pack blown-in through small holes. Under the floor, closed-cell foam on the rim joists and a vapor barrier or encapsulation handle the moisture. Historic houses get extra care: we work around original trim and plaster rather than through it.
Before we cover anything
Older houses may have knob-and-tube wiring or vermiculite insulation. We check for both, and if we find vermiculite we stop and recommend testing.

Minden Questions
Can you insulate a historic Minden house without damaging plaster?
Usually yes. Dense-pack blown-in can go in from outside behind siding, and attic and crawl work does not touch the plaster walls.
Do I need to worry about frozen pipes in Minden?
Hard freezes are not common but do happen. Insulating plumbing in crawl spaces and exterior walls lowers the risk.
Do you travel to Minden?
Yes, Minden and the rest of western Webster Parish are in our area.
What if my Minden house has old vermiculite in the attic?
Leave it alone and have it tested. If it contains asbestos, a licensed abatement contractor needs to remove it; HomeAdvisor lists $1,190 to $3,255 for that work nationally.
