The Attic Is the Hottest Room in the House

Attic air sealing and insulation is the job that most often changes how a Shreveport house feels in August. A roof in full sun heats the attic far above the outdoor temperature, and that heat pushes down through every gap in the ceiling and every thin spot in the insulation. Many homes here also have ductwork and an air handler in the attic, so cooled air is running through the hottest space in the house before it reaches a room.

Seal first

Insulation slows heat moving through it, but air leaks carry heat around it. So we seal before we insulate: gaps around recessed lights, bath fans, plumbing stacks, flues (with the right clearances), top plates of interior walls, chases and the attic hatch. In older houses, open chases and soffits can connect the attic to wall cavities and dropped ceilings below. Closing those leaks keeps hot, humid attic air out of the living space and conditioned air in.

Then insulate to depth

Louisiana's energy code treats the state as Climate Zone 2, and the Insulation Institute summary lists R-38 for ceilings in new homes. For existing homes, the Department of Energy recommends R-49 to R-60 for an attic with no insulation in Zone 2, or adding R-38 to R-49 where 3 to 4 inches already sit on the floor. On an open attic floor, blown-in cellulose or fiberglass is usually the cheapest way to get there.

Or bring the attic inside

When ducts and the air handler live in the attic, another option is to spray foam on the underside of the roof deck and seal the gable vents and soffits. That makes the attic part of the conditioned space. It costs more than blown-in, but it puts the ductwork in a much cooler space. We price both when both make sense.

Signs your attic needs work

Upstairs rooms that stay hot after dark, insulation you can see the ceiling joists through, dirty streaks on insulation around lights and wall tops (a sign of air moving through), ducts that sweat or a ceiling that feels warm to the touch in the afternoon. Get a free estimate

What This Covers

Every attic job starts with sealing and ends with insulation at the planned depth.

Ceiling air sealing

Foam and caulk around lights, fans, wiring and plumbing holes, top plates and chases.

Attic hatch and stairs

Weatherstripping and insulating the hatch or pull-down stairs, a common big leak.

Blown-in top-up

Cellulose or fiberglass blown over the sealed ceiling to the target depth.

Roof deck spray foam

Foam under the roof sheathing to bring the attic, ducts and air handler into the conditioned space.

Duct sealing touch-ups

Sealing open joints and boots we find while working in the attic, or flagging them for your HVAC company.

Old insulation removal

Pulling out wet, rodent-soiled or debris-filled insulation before new goes in.

How an Attic Job Runs

1. Inspect the attic

We measure the existing insulation, find the leaks and check for roof leaks, pests and wiring problems.

2. Written quote

Sealing, depth, target R-value and price are listed, with foam and blown-in options side by side if both fit.

3. Seal the ceiling

We close the leaks and set baffles at the eaves so soffit vents stay open.

4. Insulate

Blown-in goes in to the planned depth, or foam goes on the roof deck.

5. Check and clean

We mark the depth, clean up and walk you through what was done.

Attic Air Sealing & Insulation Questions

What is the attic insulation code in Louisiana?

Louisiana adopted the 2021 IRC effective July 1, 2023 and treats the state as Climate Zone 2 for energy. The Insulation Institute summary lists R-38 for ceilings in new construction. Existing homes are not forced to upgrade, but DOE recommends R-49 to R-60 for an uninsulated Zone 2 attic.

Should I insulate the attic floor or the roof deck?

If the attic is empty and the ducts are not up there, the floor is usually the cheaper and simpler choice. If the air handler and ducts are in the attic, foaming the roof deck brings them into a cooler space. We look at the layout and price what fits.

Is it worth adding insulation over what I have?

If the old insulation is dry and clean, yes, after the ceiling is sealed. DOE suggests adding R-38 to R-49 where 3 to 4 inches already exist in Zone 2. If it is wet, moldy or soiled by rodents, it should come out first.

How long does an attic job take?

Most single-family attic sealing and blown-in jobs take about a day. Roof deck foam can take longer and needs time for the foam to cure before you go back in.
