When Old Insulation Has to Come Out
Insulation removal and replacement is for attics and crawl spaces where the old material is doing more harm than good. In a house built in the 1960s or 1970s, which describes much of Shreveport, the attic insulation may be decades old, packed down, stained by leaks or full of droppings. In crawl spaces, humid air can leave batts soaked and falling. Covering that with new insulation buries the problem.
Reasons to remove
Rodent or pest contamination, mold or water damage from a roof leak, smoke or fire damage, insulation that is in the way of air sealing, or a remodel that needs the attic or walls opened up. Removal also lets us air seal the ceiling properly, since the gaps are hidden under the old layer.
How removal works
For loose fill, we use a large vacuum to pull the material out through a hose into bags or a container outside, so it does not travel through the house. Batts get bagged by hand. Old spray foam can be cut and scraped out, which is slower. After the attic is cleared, we clean up debris, seal the ceiling, and install new insulation to the planned depth.
Material we will not disturb
Some older homes have vermiculite insulation, a pebbly gray-brown loose fill that may contain asbestos. We do not remove it. If we find it, we stop, tell you, and recommend testing and a licensed abatement contractor.

Insulation Removal & Replacement Questions
Do I need to remove old insulation before adding new?
Only if it is wet, moldy, soiled or blocking air sealing. Clean, dry insulation can stay with new added on top.
How long does removal take?
Most attic removals take a day, with reinsulation the same day or the next.
What if I have vermiculite?
Do not disturb it. Have it tested and, if needed, removed by a licensed abatement contractor; HomeAdvisor lists $1,190 to $3,255 for asbestos removal.
Is removal messy?
It can be, which is why we vacuum to bags outside and cover the path through the house.
Can old insulation make my house smell?
Yes. Insulation soiled by rodents, or soaked by a roof leak or a damp crawl space, can give off odors that drift into the rooms below. Removing it, cleaning the space and sealing the ceiling or floor usually clears the smell, as long as the source of the water or pests is fixed too.
