What Is Under the Floor Matters Here

Crawl space insulation and encapsulation deal with a problem the north Louisiana climate makes worse: humid outdoor air and damp ground meeting the cool underside of a house. Shreveport gets about 51 inches of rain a year and averages 72% relative humidity. When that air gets pulled through open foundation vents into a crawl space cooled by the floor and ducts above, moisture can condense on the wood, the ducts and the insulation. Sagging, wet batts, musty smells and cupping floors are the usual results.

Two ways to handle a crawl space

A vented crawl space can work if the ground is covered with a vapor barrier, the floor above is insulated and air sealed, and the ducts down there are sealed and insulated. DOE recommends about R-13 for an uninsulated floor in Zone 2. The other approach is encapsulation: lay a heavy vapor barrier over the ground and up the walls, seal the vents, insulate the walls rather than the floor, and dry the space with conditioned air or a dehumidifier. Encapsulation costs more, but it is the more reliable fix in a damp crawl.

Why closed-cell foam on the walls

When a crawl space is sealed, the insulation moves from the floor to the foundation walls and rim joists. Closed-cell foam fits there because it sticks to block and wood, slows vapor at typical thickness, and does not soak up water. The Louisiana code minimum for crawl space walls in Zone 2 is listed as R-0 in the Insulation Institute summary, so insulating the walls is about comfort and moisture, not a code requirement.

Before we seal anything

We check for standing water, plumbing leaks, termite or rot damage, and grading or gutters that send water under the house. A crawl space should be dry before it is sealed. If it needs drainage, pest work or wood repair first, we tell you.

Signs your crawl space needs work

What This Covers

Pieces we combine depending on whether the crawl stays vented or gets sealed.

Ground vapor barrier

Heavy polyethylene laid over the soil, lapped and taped, to cut the moisture coming up from the ground.

Full encapsulation

Barrier over the ground and up the walls, sealed seams and piers, with vents closed.

Vent sealing

Closing foundation vents when the crawl is sealed and dried by other means.

Closed-cell wall foam

Foam on foundation walls and rim joists in a sealed crawl.

Floor insulation

Insulation between floor joists, air sealed and supported, in a vented crawl.

Wet insulation removal

Pulling out sagging, soaked or moldy batts before new work goes in.

Closed-cell on crawl space walls$2 to $5 per sq ft (HomeGuide)
Crawl space vent sealing$150 to $450 (HomeGuide)
Crawl space, spray foam$2,000 to $4,000 (HomeGuide); $1,000 to $5,900 (Fixr)
Rim joists, spray foam$2,000 to $2,500 (HomeGuide)

Sources are HomeGuide's 2026 guides to crawl space encapsulation and spray foam, plus Fixr (2025), all national. Crawl height, wall area, access, drainage and any cleanup drive the total. The number on our written estimate is the price you pay.

How a Crawl Space Job Runs

1. Crawl inspection

We check moisture, leaks, wood condition, ducts, vents and access.

2. Plan and quote

Vented or sealed, with materials, thickness and price in writing.

3. Clean out

Old wet insulation and debris come out, and the ground gets leveled where the barrier goes.

4. Barrier and insulation

The vapor barrier goes in, vents are sealed if planned, and walls or floor get insulated.

5. Walk-through

We show you photos of the finished space and explain how to keep it dry.

Crawl Space Insulation & Encapsulation Questions

Do I need to encapsulate my crawl space in Shreveport?

Not always. If the crawl is dry, a good ground vapor barrier plus a sealed, insulated floor can be enough. If it is damp, smells musty or the floor insulation keeps falling, encapsulation is usually the more reliable fix.

Can I just add a dehumidifier?

A dehumidifier works in a sealed crawl space. In a vented one it ends up trying to dry outdoor air, which does not work well. Sealing comes first.

Why is my floor insulation falling down?

Often the batts have soaked up moisture from humid air and gotten heavy, or the supports were never installed. Wet batts should come out rather than be pushed back up.

What R-value should crawl space floors have?

DOE recommends about R-13 for an uninsulated floor in Climate Zone 2. In a sealed crawl, the walls get insulated instead of the floor.
