Walls in Older Houses Are Often Empty or Thin
Wall insulation matters most in older homes and in any room you are remodeling. Census estimates for 2019-2023 put the median Shreveport home at 1973 construction, and many houses from the 1950s and 1960s were built with little or nothing in the exterior walls. A west-facing wall in a Shreveport August soaks up sun all afternoon and keeps radiating heat into the room after dark.
Open walls: remodels and additions
When the drywall is off for a remodel, or framing is up for an addition, spray foam fills the stud bays and seals around outlets, wires and plumbing in one step. Open cell is common in 2x4 walls in this climate; closed cell packs more R-value into a shallow bay. The current Louisiana code lists R-13 for wood-frame walls in Climate Zone 2, and either foam can reach that in a standard wall.
Closed walls: older homes
For walls that are finished on both sides, we can blow dense-packed cellulose or fiberglass into each stud bay through small holes, usually drilled from outside behind siding or from inside and patched. This fills empty cavities without gutting the house. We check for wiring problems first, since knob-and-tube wiring should not be buried in insulation.
What changes after
Insulated walls cut the heat coming through, make rooms feel more even, and dampen street noise. They work best paired with attic sealing, since the attic is usually the bigger leak.
How to tell your walls are empty
Walls that feel warm in the afternoon, a switch plate on an outside wall where you can see nothing inside, or an infrared check showing cold or hot stud bays. Get a free estimate

Wall Insulation Questions
Can you insulate walls without removing drywall?
Yes. Dense-pack blown-in goes in through small holes in each stud bay, from outside or inside, and the holes get patched. Foam is usually only practical in open walls.
What R-value do Louisiana walls need?
The Insulation Institute's summary of the current code lists R-13 for wood-frame walls in Climate Zone 2. That applies to new work; older walls are not required to be upgraded.
Is open-cell or closed-cell better for walls?
In a standard 2x4 wall here, open cell is common and costs less. Closed cell fits shallow walls or spots with moisture concerns.
Will insulating walls help with noise?
Yes, filled walls cut outside and room-to-room noise, and open-cell foam does that well.
How do I know if my walls have any insulation?
Turn off the power, remove a switch or outlet cover on an outside wall and look beside the box with a flashlight. An infrared camera on a hot afternoon also shows empty bays. We check several walls during the estimate, because older houses are sometimes insulated in one room and empty in the next.
